Who Am I?-The Identity Crisis
John 14:1 ~ 14:6

2001-06-12

Long ago there was a missionary couple with one daughter who came to Korea and lived here many years. The missionary was always working for God while his wife stayed at home and was a great mother and wife. When the daughter graduated from high school and returned to America to go to the university, her mother became greatly depressed. She went to several hospitals for treatment; all treatment failed. Then she came to me for counseling and asked, "Pastor, who am I? All my life I've served my husband and my daughter." She had lost a great sense of duty and responsibility, and I knew she was suffering from an identity crisis. At some time in our lives, all of us ask the question, "Who am I?" To answer it, we must understand the nature of mankind-born in the image of God.

The tragedy of fallen man resulted in man's identity crisis. Adam and Eve were created in the image of God and given authority to rule over all things on the earth. At that time, they definitely knew their identity; they were sure of it. But Adam's sin brought an identity crisis for all mankind. People don't know who they are or where they're going. They don't know what their responsibilities are. They think they are making their own decisions and yet they are addicted to the influence of the Internet, television, radio, and even cell phones. These things promote a loss of identity and people become anxious without them.

We should find ourselves and reclaim our identity. Man's identity was lost in the Garden of Eden but it was reinstated at Calvary through Jesus Christ (Romans 4:25; John 3:16). We should not be drowning in sin but living in glory. We must confirm to ourselves that we are the children of God-not the slaves of Satan (1 Corinthians 1:30; John 1:12; Colossians 1:13; John 1:12). We are people of joy, people with a purpose in life, with a reason to live, and we know where we're going. We must know and claim our rightful identity as Christians so we can claim the benefits of that identity (John 8:32).

How should I live? Live as a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). Meditate on your identity in Christ. You are the child of God, a citizen of heaven. David faced Goliath with boldness and confidence because of his constant awareness of who he was in God. Confess with your lips who you are in God (1 Peter 1:23-25). Pray to understand God's Word (Matthew 6:10; 1 Corinthians 2:9-10). Praise the Lord, be joyful, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances (Hebrews 13:15; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). Who are we? People cannot know their identity except through Christ and His Word.

Heavenly Father, help us learn who we are in Jesus Christ and have strong faith to live victoriously.
