The Vine and Its Branch
John 15:1 ~ 15:8

When I was young, my father had an orchard. Even during a cold winter, he cut off the branches that had died. My job was to take the branches home to use for firewood. When a branch is cut, it withers and dies; it has no nourishment. Jesus describes himself as the true vine and those who have become His disciples as the branches.

There is a great difference in a branch that remains in the vine (the fruitful) and a branch that has been cut off (the fruitless). By remaining attached to Christ as the source of life, a branch can receive nourishment enabling it to produce fruit. God is the gardener who takes care of each branch, in order that it may bear fruit (John 15:1-3). He expects all of us to bear fruit - to have the quality of Christian character that brings glory to God through our lives and witness.

As a branch, we must remain in Jesus the vine and He will remain in us. If a branch is detached from Him, it will be fruitless; it can do nothing (John 15:4,5). Englishman Hudson Taylor went to China and distributed medicine and clothing to people in poverty. When his supplies were gone, he was exhausted and in despair; he could do no more. He received a letter from his sister quoting John 15:5, "If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." He thought, Oh! I am a branch; I've been trying to be the vine. He began to depend on Christ as his source, and one day truckloads of medicine and clothing arrived. God had spoken to a movement of people unknown to him in the USA, and they collected and sent these items to China for Hudson Taylor's ministry. Branches are held and protected by Jesus the vine even through the storms of life. They are continually given nourishment to bear fruit: the fruit of righteousness (John 10:10), holiness (Galatians 5:19-21; Romans 1:28-32), health, joy, wealth, and the fruit of blessing since Jesus was cursed for us.

How can we live a fruitful life? Live by faith (Romans 1:17; Mark 11:24). Be filled with the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22,23). Feed on the Word of God (Matthew 4:4). Call unto Jesus and He will answer (Jeremiah 33:3). Seek first His kingdom (Matthew 6:33). Obey His Word (Deuteronomy 7:12-15). Ask and you will receive (Matthew 7:7-11; John 15:7,16). Plant and you will reap (Matthew 7:12). Speak only positive, optimistic words (Mark 11:23). Forgive others first (Mark 11:25). It is to our Father's glory that Jesus wants us to bear much fruit, showing we are His disciples (John 15:8,9).

Heavenly Father, through the redemption of Jesus Christ, we have been given the source of power and life supplied by Christ the vine. As attached branches, may we continually remain in Christ so You may bear great fruit in us for Your glory.
