Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
Is God Truly a God of Love?
1 John 4:9 ~ 4:12

2002-02-03

Many people do not know if God really exists. But they say that if He does exist, He is not a God of love because of the terrible suffering and evil on this earth. The Nazis killed millions of Jews, Stalin killed millions of his own race, children are dying of cancer, and people in Africa and India suffer daily from poverty and disease. People ask, "How could a God of love allow such terrible suffering?" People say that God is either uncaring or that He does not exist. How can we answer these questions?

God is absolutely a good God. He reveals His goodness in creation. "God saw all that he had made, and it was very good?(Genesis 1:31). The original world that God created was without evil; it was entirely good. The Garden of Eden was good, and man was made in God's image to enjoy God and His creation. Because of God's love, man was also given a free will - to make choices. But when Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit, they used their free wills to sin. Their sin -not God - brought evil, suffering, and curses into existence (Genesis 3:16-19).

God suffered because of man's free will when Adam and Eve chose to sin against Him. But because of His love, Jesus chose to die on the Cross to free us and save us from sin. This shows the dynamics between the free will and the love of God. Because of His love, He gave us a free will. Then because of His love, He died on the Cross to redeem us (John 3:16). Today when we hear the Gospel, we must make a choice to respond to it through our free will (Ephesians 2:8; John 5:24). Adam and Eve chose sin, but we have been given another chance - a new choice because of Jesus?suffering and sacrifice on the Cross for us.

The righteous will live by faith (Romans 1:17). Christians are those who have chosen to believe in Christ. But we also know that "the Lord desires that the wicked will turn from their evil ways and live" (Ezekiel 33:11). "We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one"(1 John 5:19; 1 Peter 5:8; Revelation 12:12; Colossians 1:13; 1 Peter 2:9). God does not bring the terrible tragedies in this world. Satan brings them because of the results of our choices. Our free wills can bring heaven or hell upon us. Let us choose the Lord and be strong in Him so we can take our stand against the devil's schemes (Ephesians 6:10-12). God is truly a God of love.

Heavenly Father, the world is full of wickedness and suffering - evidence of the fallen nature of mankind. Our free wills have brought immense possibilities but also great tragedies. Help us to choose You, the source of good, and bear the fruits of goodness.
