The Stern Disciplinary Action of God
Hebrews 12:5 ~ 12:13

The greatest problem of modern mothers is overprotection. They don't discipline their children; they try to cover up the faults of their children. Such children cannot adapt properly to society. In our lives of faith, God disciplines us. Why does God discipline us?

The reason for discipline is that God our Father has great expectations of us. Just as a loving father disciplines his son (Proverbs 13:24), so the Lord disciplines His children because He loves us. We should walk in His ways and deeply respect Him (Deuteronomy 8:5-6). Why does God put this burden of discipline on us? It is His desire for us to be like Him, to become mature in Him (Ephesians 4:13; Matthew 5:48; Job 5:17). Why does God set such high goals for us? Because He is God. In the stages of His discipline, the Holy Spirit first prompts our conscience to listen to Him and seek God's righteousness. If we don't listen, then He takes up His rod and uses it on us until we lose all peace and finally look unto Him. God called Jonah to go to Nineveh, but Jonah was determined to go the other way and ignored God'voice. So, God had to use stronger discipline and sent along a great fish to swallow Jonah.

The purpose for discipline is so we will repent and turn back to the Lord and His ways. He says, "Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent" (Revelation 3:19-20). In the parable of the wayward son (Luke 15), he left his father's home and then he lost everything - including his health and wealth. If everything had gone well with him, he wouldn't have changed his ways. But when he was completely broken, he returned to his father and confessed his sin against heaven and against his father. If we are like an egg with a soft shell/heart, we can easily be broken, hear God's voice, and respond to His smallest command. But if our hearts are like the shell of a walnut, God needs to use His rod - His hammer of discipline to break us until we call out to Him with open hearts, willing "to be like Him in true righteousness and holiness" (Ephesians 4:23-24).

When we are disciplined, what reactions will we have? Will we fight back? Will we cry? Will we complain? Will we think lightly of God's disciplinary action? When God raises His rod of correction - His hammer, it is time to repent immediately, tell God we're sorry for our ways, and determine to change. We must patiently accept God's discipline. Only then can God produce in us a life of righteousness and peace.

Heavenly Father, we can't escape Your disciplinary action. It is not a joyful time; it is a time of tears. Help us to accept your love and training that will make us more like You.
