He Saved Others but He Can't Save Himself
Isaiah 53:1 ~ 53:8

2003-04-13

As Christ was suffering and being humiliated upon the Cross, the high priests, the scribes, and the teachers of the Law who had denied Christ's ministry of salvation during His life now unintentionally acknowledged it. They couldn't understand how He could save others and then die so helplessly upon the Cross. They scoffed, "If you are the Son of God, come down from that Cross, and we will believe you." Why did Christ choose to remain upon the Cross? The prophet Isaiah, 600-700 years before Christ's birth, received a vision of the suffering Christ would face. This is recorded in Isaiah 53.

He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows (Isaiah 53:4). Jesus Christ could have come down from the Cross, but because He loved us, He chose not to come down. He carried our sorrows - not His. He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases (Mathew 8:16,17). Forgiveness and healing cannot be separated.

He was pierced for our transgressions, and He was crushed for our iniquities. When the root of sin is still within us, we break God's laws (Romans 3:20,23; Ephesians 2:1,8,9). However, Jesus suffered greatly because of mankind's original sin (Isaiah 52:14; Romans 5:8; Hebrews 8:12), and His shed blood cancelled all of our sins.

The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him. Adam was punished for his sin and was driven out from the Garden of Eden to toil for his food. This is the kind of life we were leading (Jeremiah 2:13). But God reconciled us to himself through Christ (2 Corinthians 5:18-21), and God fills us with His love and peace (Colossians 1:20).

By His wounds we are healed. Existentially, mankind's heart is diseased from rising early, staying up late, and toiling for food to eat (Psalm 127:2; Ecclesiastes 5:17). Christ desires holistic healing for humanity (2 Corinthians 5:17; 3 John 1:2; Psalm 103:3-5). Because of His wounds we have been healed (Romans 8:32).

God prepared the sacrifice (Isaiah 53:6; John 1:29). The Lamb of God carried the sin of the world. The blood of Jesus Christ became the purification offering (Hebrews 9:12), the guilt offering (Isaiah 53:10), the burnt offering (Hebrews 10:11,12), and the peace offering (Romans 3:25).

No one realized that Jesus was being punished for the sins of God's people. It was only after the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost that the followers of Jesus realized this through the revelation of the Holy Spirit.

Heavenly Father, thank You for making us righteous through Christ's suffering on the Cross.
