Successful Relationships
1 Corinthians 13:1 ~ 13:3

People are social beings. From birth, everyone relates to his or her parents and siblings, growing into relationships at school, in the neighborhood, and in the greater society. Those who are able to maintain harmonious relationships can live successful and happy lives. However, just as people have unique facial features, they also have different personalities that can open the door to conflict, especially when people fail to recognize the differences in others. How can people have successful relationships?

Make an effort to understand. Talking and listening are both needed. When my sons were grown, they told me I didn't listen to their opinions while they were growing up. As a young father, I didn't realize I should listen to them. I thought I should just command them to do this and that. I would raise them differently now. We must make every effort to understand and respect others by listening to their viewpoints (Romans 15:2; James 1:19; Proverbs 12:18; Philippians 2:4).

Be sympathetic. People are emotional beings. Be gentle (1 Peter 3:8). Look at the person's eyes to show you are interested in what they are saying, have a sincere attitude, and express agreement with a nod or a smile. Avoid confrontational words (Proverbs 15:1; 25:15).

Be generous with praise. Be positive. Being critical or negative will only lead to a tendency to search for faults in others (Matthew 7:3). Emphasize the good qualities and potential of others: your spouse, children, relatives, neighbors, and everyone (Matthew 7:12). Praise is free and builds good relationships (Proverbs 16:24).

Forgive others. Hatred and anger lead to tremendous stress and the breakdown of peace and happiness of mind and heart. Read what God says in James 1:20, Proverbs 16:32, and in Matthew 6:14,15. God forgives us, and we must forgive others-seven times if we need to (Luke 17:3,4; 6:37).

Reconcile. To reconcile is to settle our differences, to reunite. Forgiveness and reconciliation have the power to restore our relationship with God and with others (2 Corinthians 5:18-21; Ephesians 2:14; Colossians 1:20; 1 Thessalonians 5:15).

Love each other. Love is to give, not receive; it actively shares the burdens of others (1 John 3:18). Love is positive and constructive, and it covers over a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8; Proverbs 10:12). In love, there is limitless hope (Romans 5:5; 8:28,32).

Heavenly Father, fill us with Christ's love so that we may understand, sympathize, praise, forgive, and reconcile with one another.
