Eight Blessings Toward Happiness (Part 2)
Matthew 5:1 ~ 5:12

Last week in our message we shared four of the eight conditions required to enjoy happiness. The first was to be poor in spirit; second, to mourn; third, to be meek; and fourth, to hunger and thirst for righteousness. Today we will consider the remaining four.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. God demonstrated His mercy toward us by presenting Christ as a sacrifice for our sins through His redemption on the Cross (Romans 3:25; 1 Peter 1:3). We are indebted to God for such great mercy. We should show mercy to others, and mercy will be shown to us (James 2:13).

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. The reflection of the sky can clearly be seen in a pond of clean water. In order to have a pure heart and present a clear reflection of Jesus, we must repent of our sins (Hebrews 9:22; 1 John 1:7,9), be cleansed by the Word (Ephesians 5:26), and allow the fire of the Holy Spirit to burn away the impurities in our hearts (Matthew 3:11,12). Then we can experience the Spirit of wisdom and revelation so we can know God better (Ephesians 1:17,18). The Holy Spirit will guide us and awaken our spirits to the truth, confirming the existence of God through prayer (John 16:13; Jeremiah 33:3).

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Jesus Christ the Son of God is a peacemaker! We were God's enemies, but Jesus brought peace between God and mankind through His redemption on the Cross (Romans 5:10; Ephesians 2:14). We must be peacemakers on this earth (Luke 2:14). This is why our church members are having a prayer meeting at the City Hall this afternoon, to pray that God will stop the potential war in this land. Peace of mind comes only through our faith in Christ (John 14:27; 2 Corinthians 5:18,19). In our relationships, let us take off the glasses of the law, put on the glasses of grace, and look at others with the love of God. Let us be peacemakers; let us not judge one another (Matthew 7:1-5; 5:39-42).

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Christ was persecuted the most because He was righteous. Everywhere He went, unrighteousness was exposed. Those who accept Christ are salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13-16). Light drives away darkness; light reveals sin. Therefore, persecution and resistance is unavoidable (John 3:20; 15:18,19). If we are persecuted for Christ's sake, we will be blessed, and our reward in heaven will be great (Matthew 5:11,12; 1 Peter 4:14).

Heavenly Father, help us meditate on these blessings and follow this biblical map to happiness.
